Here are two opportunities being provided by the University of Minnesota's Joint Safety Team (JST).
1. Chemical Safety in High School Labs Workshop
2. Hazardous Waste Disposal - Chemical Safety Day Program
JST is a student-led initiative dedicated to promoting lab safety, with support from industry leaders like PPG, DOW, and Sherwin Williams, as well as department funds. The team has also inspired similar safety programs at institutions such as Northwestern and the University of Chicago.
Our committee organizes safety-focused industry tours, including recent visits to 3M and Sherwin Williams, and ongoing collaborative tours with universities like UW–Eau Claire. A key component of our mission is the annual high school safety workshop series, which has served Minnesota’s high school chemistry teachers for the past three years, equipping them with resources to foster safe learning environments and an optional graduate credit. We recently presented our work at the MnSTA Conference on Science Education, where it was enthusiastically received by educators.
