Join us Wednesday, November 9 at 1pm (ET) for a virtual field trip to the National Museum of Mathematics! We will explore the concept of infinity through several demonstrations with the museum’s Executive Director Cindy Lawrence and Distinguished Visiting Professor Tim Chartier.
What happens when you pull on an infinite rope? Can you cut the rope in half? Then, we’ll move from the massively big to the exceedingly small. Suppose we poke infinitely many holes in a cube, that get smaller and smaller as they head toward having zero size. What will we get — will there be anything left? Using this principle, we’ll also look at mathematical art that has infinite detail. Together, we’ll take a deep dive into the infinite through the lens of mathematics.
To learn more about how the concepts of zero and infinity revolutionized mathematics, watch NOVA Zero to Infinity, premiering at 9/8c on Wednesday, November 16 on PBS.
