3-8 grade Summer Workshops |
These 3 - day (two days in person, one day virtual), regional workshops are designed for elementary generalists and middle school science teachers in mind! These workshops will begin with participants experiencing a Minnesota environmental phenomenon in the field. Participants will use the phenomenon to explore the content and create resources that can be used with students, no matter the curriculum. Participants will earn a stipend of $80 per day. Please look at our ESTEP 2.0 LIST of 2019 Academic Standards and Benchmarks Course Bundles to see the benchmarks addressed at each workshop. The registration fee for each camp is ONLY $50 due to a generous grant from MnSTA. Participants are responsible for housing, meals and transportation costs.

Summer 2025
Soudan/Iron Range Geology
July 8-9 - Dr. Russ Colson, Mary Colson, Dr. Annia Fayon at Virginia, MN
This workshop engages participants in a field and lab investigation at Soudan MN,
exploring Minnesota geology from the most ancient times up through recent times. Participants will look at evidence for past mountain building, volcanism and glaciation. We will tour the Soudan Underground Mine, and visit several outcrops to work on interpreting the stories that rocks have to tell us! Out in the field, we will gather images, videos and collect samples that you can use in your classrooms. We will focus on teaching science as a practice, and look at the impact of natural resource extraction on people, the environment, MN history, including in particular, perspective of Indigenous people.***Please note that June 8 is a long field day - bus will return to Virginia at 6:00 pm.
Housing may be available at the Minnesota North College Virginia Campus dormitories for additional cost. More information to come soon.

Minnesota Water Resources
July 14-15 - Haley Kalina, Marlene Schoeneck at Alexandria, MN
Dive deeply into 3D science learning by taking an up-close look at real-world earth and environmental science in a local watershed setting. Teachers will spend most of the first day observing, developing questions, mapping, and investigating as students in the lab and outdoors to understand the health of a local system. On day two, teachers will present their field investigation findings, and further examine the pedagogy and strategies for using local phenomena for teaching and learning science for grades 3-8. Science and Engineering Practices in Earth, Life and Physical Science will be explored.
Housing may be available at the Alexandria Technical and Community College Campus dormitories for additional cost. More information to come soon.

Join your fellow science teachers in an investigation of the unique landforms,
groundwater movement, and environmental issues of SE Minnesota. Visit multiple
surface features on the first day and spend most of day two underground in Mystery
Cave. Renew your understanding of 3D teaching and make plans to address Minnesota groundwater use and protection issues with your students.

Minnesota Rocks as Resources
July 30-31 - Dr. Kate Pound and Lee Schmitt at St Cloud, MN
Investigate the igneous rock and gravel quarries of around St. Cloud. Visit multiple field
sites on the first day and dive into a deeper understanding of the geologic history,
environmental protections, and rock-related industries of the St. Cloud region on day
two. Collaborate on planning the integration of Minnesota rock/mineral resources and 3D teaching into your students’ study of geologic phenomena.
Housing is available at the St Cloud State University dormitories for additional cost. Single rooms with air conditioning for $51 per night, and includes parking. Check in on July 29 available. More information on how to register for housing coming soon.
