MnSTA Welcomes our MnCOSE 2012 keynotes Dr. Bill Robertson and Dr. Eric Jolly!!
MnCOSE is a stranded conference containing both general sessions and strands of sessions tailored for particular teaching and content areas. MnCOSE 2012 will operate with five strands, each organized by our MnSTA Board of Directors representative from the respective area. In addition to strand specific sessions, many general interest sessions will be spread throughout the day on Friday!
Each strand will feature a keynote speaker and several presentations directly related to the content area.

Research of Natural Organic Matter (NOM)
Dr. Elizabeth Minor, UMD
Dr. Minor will talk about her research of natural Organic Matter (NOM), its chemical activity and fate in aquatic ecosystems like Lake Superior. Dr. Minor will describe the various techniques employed in the research including electro spray mass spectrometry, chromatograph, ultra filtration and radiocarbon and stable carbon isotope analysis.

Herd Immunity and Strategies for Evading the Next Pandemic

During this discussion, Dr. Clark will integrate current concepts in infection and immunity to explain major pandemics of the past three millennium of human history.

Building Physics Community: Global Physics Department and You
Dr. Andy Rundquist, Hamline University
Alone in your school? Wish you had more people to bounce ideas off of? The Global Physics Department is for you. I'll share some of what we do and also give an example of the types of physics ideas we bounce around (why does light appear to slow down in materials?).

Infusing Equity with SciGirls
Dr. Lisa Regalla, TPT Television
The Emmy-award winning PBS Kids television series, SciGirls, features groups of middle school girls modeling authentic inquiry-based STEM projects. The SciGirls television series, website, and outreach initiatives emphasize current research on strategies, the SciGirls Seven, proven to increase girls’ (ages 8-13) engagement in STEM. These strategies have also been proven to benefit underrepresented minorities. Everyone benefits from a gender equitable approach to STEM!

Dr. Ojakangas will guide you with an overview of Minnesota’s geological history, and forty two road guides while discussing the landforms and rocks visible from a car window and a nearly waysides and parks, including Pipestone National Monument, Grand Portage National Monument, and Voyageurs National Park.
